TEEN COURT
ADVISORY BOARD MEETING MINUTES
APRIL 16, 2003

Present: Joyce Barkel, Cindy vanderPeyl, Mark Geister, Chanda Miller, Al Rios, Lee Hoeksema, Mark Ponitz.

Absent: Sarah Johnson (exc.), Alice Holliman (exc.), Nicole Bierema, Chelsea Brown, Duane Baker, Jennifer DeYoung (exc.).

I. Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 3:36.

II. Welcome/Introductions

No introductions as no visitors present.

III. Approval of Minutes

Minutes of the March meeting were distributed and accepted.

IV. Unfinished Business

Junior Welfare League did not approve our grant request to fund a program training video.
Teen Court session was held on March 26. Trials went well and jurors did a very good job.
Duane was unable to schedule a HCHS jury for the March 26 session. The session was rescheduled at the Fillmore Complex on April 23 with two HHS defendants, along with an additional referral.
Chanda distributed Ottawa County CHOICE Program brochures to the Board for jury consideration as an additional option to the list of Sentencing Guidelines "suggested consequences."

V. New Business

Discussion regarding the need for scheduling changes for sessions held at the Fillmore Complex resulted in the following points in agreement:

- There is a need to change the session time to eliminate removing students (both jurors and defendants) from school, and often parents from work.
- There is a need for additional judges to cover the Fillmore Complex sessions.
- Discussion regarding the need to add another school to the program process resulted in Mark contacting/inviting West Ottawa High School representatives to the next Board meeting.
- Chanda will write a letter to Duane and address time change for scheduling sessions and the need to have HCHS staff and student representation at board meetings; and ask for a renewed commitment from HCHS relative to support of the Teen Court program.

The next board meeting will be May 21, 2003 at 3:30, Third Floor Conference Room. Please contact the Teen Court Program Coordinator, Chanda Miller (355-1325) if you are unable to attend the meeting. This contact information is new… please make note of the change.
